International Tropical & Infectious Diseases summer School 2010 (11-31 July 2010)

Tropical Medicine is one of the most outstanding medical fields in Egypt. It is concerned with Egypt’s most widespread endemic diseases, especially those affecting the GIT.
The course aims to introduce this branch to the international students with the help of highly experienced professors and staff members. A variety of interactive teaching techniques, skills and facilities will be used.
" Program Modules"
The program is made up of modules:
• Parasitology
• Tropical Medicine
• Ophthalmology
• Diagnostic Skills (Endoscopy & Ultrasonography)
• Pulmonary Medicine & tuberculosis.
• PCR Lab .
each module will be taught for one day therefore participants will have a glimpse of the essential aspects of the program
Participants will attend Theoretical lectures, lab training, and bedside clinical rounds. They can also examine cases in Outpatient clinics, Endoscopy & Ultrasonography units.

Why “Kasr Al Ainy”?
It is one of the oldest medical schools in Egypt and Africa, inaugurated long before the establishment of Cairo University and became part of it in 1925.
At the present time, the Faculty of Medicine includes 37 departments, 42 specialized units, 2773 faculty members, 9423 undergraduate students, and 3732 post graduate students.
Cairo University hospitals affiliated to The Faculty of Medicine comprise more than 5200 beds so it’s considered to be the largest medical institution in the Middle East and probably one of the largest centers in the world.
Kasr Al Ainy is considered as a symbol of the medical profession in Egypt, an icon of science and culture, and an inspiring image of human compassion & mercy with the numerous services & wide sector of population it serves. Hence, the founding date of Kasr Al Ainy on March 11, 1827 was chosen as the day of the annual celebration of the Egyptian medical profession.

Training consists of:
• Examination (Bedside Clinical Round):
o Liver Cirrhosis.
o Jaundice.
o Splenomegaly.
o Portal Hypertension.
o Ascites.
o Lymphadenopathies.
o Chronic liver diseases.
o Viral Hepatitis.
o Tuberculosis
o Parasitic lung diseases.
• Outpatient Clinic:
To approach infectious diseases especially:
o Trachoma.
o Conjunctivitis.
• Lectures by department staff:
Discussing related cases & techniques studied during the clinical round.
• GIT Endoscopy Unit & Diagnostic Ultrasonography Center:
Where you will learn basics of Endoscopy & Ultrasonography & observe different techniques.
• PCR Lab Center:
You will spend a day in the molecular technology laboratory to learn basic techniques of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) as a key investigation for Hepatic viruses.
• Parasites in ACTION!
The course will offer students an access to the Parasitology department’s lab once per week. It’s an amazing opportunity where they will be able to watch microscopic slides of parasites causing the diseases encountered during the clinical round as well as some real specimen jars! In addition, professors of the Parasitology department will be tailoring a special 2-lecture course for the students discussing the major endemic tropical parasites; namely Schistosomiasis, Amoebiasis, Hydatidosis & more. This will offer students an opportunity to study the morphology, life cycle & other essential information about the parasites involved.
Are there any certain requirements?
• Applicants must have completed 2 years of medical school.
• English Language (Good command of English is a must!!!)

Where will I stay?
In a 3 stars hotel located in the heart of Cairo “Downtown”…directly in front of the Egyptian Museum & about 20 min. walking to the hospital (along the Nile river), with an amazing panoramic view of the Nile.
Students will stay in double, triple or quadruple air-conditioned rooms with private bathrooms.
