International SSS Summer Clerkship 2011 (July 31st – August 18th, 2011)
Due to our extensive experience in hosting international students during the past 30 years, the SSS is pleased to announce its ultimatum….The SSS Summer Clerkship 2011. This year the SSS is back with even bigger opportunities and wider varieties for international medical students.
So if you are a student of medicine with basic clinical experience, then here is your chance. Through our interactive teaching techniques and sharing of experience we are going to enhance your medical skills. The SSS Summer Clerkship 2011 aims at introducing you to the Egyptian healthcare settings, and the various means of dealing with specific medical problems.

Venue: (July 31st – August 18th, 2011)
Time: Kasr Kasr Al-Ainy Faculty of Medicine Teaching Hospitals and Institutes, Cairo University, Egypt.
About “Kasr Al Ainy”:
It is one of the oldest medical schools in Egypt and Africa, inaugurated long before the establishment of Cairo University and became part of it in 1925.
At the present time, the Faculty of Medicine includes 37 departments, 42 specialized units, 2773 faculty members, 9423 undergraduate students, and 3732 post graduate students.
Cairo University hospitals affiliated to The Faculty of Medicine comprise more than 5200 beds so it’s considered to be the largest medical institution in the Middle East and probably one of the largest centers in the world.
Kasr Al Ainy is considered as a symbol of the medical profession in Egypt, an icon of science and culture, and a inspiring image of human compassion & mercy with the numerous services & wide sector of population it serves. Hence, the founding date of Kasr Al Ainy on March 11, 1827 was chosen as the day of the annual celebration of the Egyptian medical profession.

Training Departments:
The training will take place in Cairo University (Kasr Al-Ainy) Teaching Hospitals and Institutes. You are going to choose your preference from one of the following high caliber departments:

- *Emergency Medicine
- *Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine
- *Cardiology
- *Rheumatology
- *General Surgery
- *Ophthalmology
- *OB/Gyn
- *Pediatric Hematology
- *Pediatric Nephrology
- *Neonatology
The participants are going to get an insight into the theoretical aspects along with the associated laboratory investigations, management and medical discussions related to the case. This will be done through hands on clinical examination, staff rounds, outpatient clinics and surgical techniques.
Training consists of:
- *History Taking (All history sheets are written in English & can be discussed with residents or interns)
- *Examination (Bedside Clinical Round)
Hands-on examination of patients who are very cooperative during their stay in the inpatients’ wards.
- *Outpatient Clinic.
- *Lectures by the department staff.
Case based dicussions & techniques studied during the clinical round.
- *Introduction to Diagnostic Tools. e.g. Ultrasonography, Endoscopy, ERCP…etc
- *Direct observation of practical skills and operations.
* Order of the program contents will be defined according to the training department.
Training Days:
Daily from 09:00 am – 01:30 pm (except Thursday; from 09:00 am – 11.30 am)
Friday & Saturday (weekends are off)
* The scientific program is 2 weeks in duration.

Accommodation:
During your stay in Egypt you are going to reside in King's Hotel.The hotel is centrally located in the safe prestigious district of Dokki. It's a 10 minute drive from the Egyptian museum and Cairo downtown. It lies within a walking distance from the University of Cairo and the medical school. There's a nearby subway station.
Students will stay in double or triple air-conditioned rooms with private bathrooms.
Hotel Facilities: free Towels, Linen, Luggage Storage, internet access, safety deposit box & free kitchen facilities.
Restaurant, Laundry, Airport Transfer, Telephone/Fax Facilities, 24 Hour Reception, Travel Desk/Travel Info, Lift / Elevator.

Tours & trips:
A- Giza Tour (Great Pyramids-Sphinx-Saqqara-Dahshur)
Starts Saturday morning, 6th August, and ends at 5 p.m...An English speaking tourist guide will lead this tour.
For thousands of years, the largest structures on Earth were pyramids: first the Red Pyramid in the Dahshur (40 Km south to Cairo) and then the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still remaining.
*Saqqara features numerous pyramids, including the world's oldest standing step pyramid. It’s Located around 30 km south of Cairo.

B- Alexandria Trip.
Starts Friday early morning, 5th August, and ends at 11 p.m…

Requirements:
- *Filled Online Application Form sent before the 20th of July midnight.
- *Good command of English as English is the official language of the clerkship.
- *Proof of enrollment in your medical school indicating that you have been exposed to the clinical aspect of medicine.
- *A digital scanned copy of your passport
- *A digital scanned copy of your passport-size photo.
- *A copy of the flight ticket to Cairo before the 23rd of July, 2011.
Application:

To apply, please send afilled online application form and the required documents before the 20th of July 2011.
Priority will be given on a first come, first served basis to the first 25 valid applicants who fulfilled the requirements. Additional applications to this number will be added to a waiting list in case of future vacancy.
Fees:
- *The clinical clerkship
- *Accommodation; including arrival and departure days (from the 31st of July till the 12th of August)
- *Breakfast and lunch
* The above mentioned fees do not include the social program.
- The social program (To Giza, Alexandria, Hurghada, Luxor and Aswan) € 190
- The price includes:
- *Transportation.

- *2 meals / day.
