Professor Wafaa El-Sadr " Global Citizenship" speech

25.December.2010

Back in early 90’s when AIDS was still unnamed, women and people of colour were difficult to recruit and maintain in clinical trials. But this did not stop Dr.Wafaa from trying to help out these people. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr.Wafaa graduating from Kasr Al-Ainy School of medicine in 1974 completed her postgraduate studies in New York where she later noticed an increase in the number of cases of Tuberculosis. Suspecting that the patients were not completing the six-month treatment of TB because of lack social support systems she came up with the idea of “surrogate family” model. -- She created a clinic with a comfortable home-like feeling where she trained the doctors not to just talk to their patients but to listen to them too. She figured that if patients felt comfortable coming to the clinic the doctors would be able to follow up their day-to-day treatment. Applying this method in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood, the completion rate of treatment jumped from 11% in 1992 to 89% in 1993. -- Thinking of all the HIV mothers she also treated, she noticed that they tended not to come back for their own health although they’d run to the nearest physician if their children as much as sneezed. That’s when she thought of using the family-focused approach to HIV where she started having a joint clinic where moms and babies could be seen together. -- She became the director of AIDS research in Harlem for the Community Programs for Clinical Research on AIDS (CPCRA). She also established the International Center for AIDS care and treatment (ICAP). -- She then expanded her work into the Sub-Saharan Africa, where hundreds of clinics spread across 14 African countries are connected to El-Sadr’s organization. -- In 2008 She received the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation awards (commonly referred to as a “genius grant”), for her creativity, originality, and potential to make important contributions for the future. -- In 2009, Rolling Stone named her to its list of “100 People Who Are Changing America.” And in the same year the 165 year old American magazine "Scientific American" named her in its Scientific American 10 : Guiding Science for Humanity. -- In November 2009, The Utne Reader named El-Sadr one of the “50 Visionaries Who Are Changing Your World.” -- Nowadays she’s the director of the International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP) and director of the Center for Infectious Disease Epidemiological Research (CIDER) at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. She’s also a professor of medicine and epidemiology at Columbia University and a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- join us on Thursday the 30th of December · 12:00 - 15:00 at the Clinical Toxicology Center - Main hall - Kasr AlAiny School of Medicine ---" Global Citizenship" speech by Professor Wafaa El-Sadr ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
